Give Bullying the Boot at MMS

October is National Bullying Prevention Month and a perfect time to kick-off the OLWEUS Bullying Prevention Program.  Merriwether Middle School has made a commitment to end bullying and build positive relationships within the school. Karson Guess, the Bullying Prevention Coordinator at MMS said, “At the beginning of the year, the entire MMS staff went through OLWEUS training. It was great to see our faculty working together to develop a plan that will end bullying at MMS and will positively affect our school’s climate.”

To introduce the students to the OLWEUS program, MMS held their first (ever) OLWEUS kick-off assembly. The theme for the assembly was “Give Bullying the Boot!” Students were encouraged to dress up in their best cowboy or cowgirl attire.

Throughout the school year, students will hold bi-weekly OLWEUS classroom meetings through advisory. These meetings are designed to foster better peer relationships with a trusted adult in the school. School-wide bullying prevention guidelines will be implemented at MMS. The OLWEUS program is just one way that MMS is ensuring that all of their students feel safe and supported.
