Setting Goals for Success

Merriwether Middle School (MMS) students have been analyzing their South Carolina State Test data and their Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) data in advisory.

MMS students meet every two weeks in advisory. The purpose of advisory is to improve interpersonal relationships within the school as well as promote academic achievement and overall student success.

Sixth grader Jacobe Jefferson shared, “I love advisory because it is and fun and I get to set up and talk about my goals. We get to do fun stuff in there, too.”

One way MMS students are excelling is by reflecting on their personal data and setting short and long term goals. The goals they set are ones that they will be able to track throughout the year. They will also be sharing their goals and how they are progressing towards success with their families during our student-led conferences.

“It’s important for students to set goals so that they take ownership in their learning. This makes their learning more personalized and relevant to them,” shared MMS Principal, Derek Forrest.
