ProTeam Offered at MMS

ProTeam, now offered as a course at Merriwether Middle School, is a curriculum based class outlining leadership opportunities in teaching, mentoring, and coaching. The course was established by the Center for Education Recruitment, Retention, and Advancement with the purpose of giving students an opportunity to explore leadership at the middle school level. A student in the course, Marissa Morris, shared that, “ProTeam helps me in becoming a better leader.” Morris is one of the captains of the volleyball team at MMS.

The first unit of the semester is a based on the self-reflection needed to be an effective leader and will lead to each student designing their own instructional unit. Some students are planning to gear their instruction towards academics and others towards athletics or games. This week, students took the True Colors personality test and discussed the variety of personalities within a group of students. Riley Schlachter’s thoughts toward the personality test were, “I thought it was very helpful because it helped us find out what our personality and interests are.” The course helped to open their minds to the types of interactions that leaders have when trying to balance such a diverse range of personalities.

The students in ProTeam will participate and lead several service based learning assignments this year, on and off the Merriwether campus. ProTeam will volunteer with Project Unify, read at the elementary schools, lead technology forums to seniors, and coach games or sports with classmates at MMS. Zach Dobbs, the MMS band director, is teaching the ProTeam course for its’ inaugural year. He says, “I have always wanted to instruct this course, and I am so happy to start it on campus. I was a Teacher Cadet student in high school and without having that experience I may not have learned that I wanted to be in a leadership position. Today I teach middle school and high school band, coach soccer, and lead community groups.”

There are 30 MMS students in the first year of ProTeam course. ProTeam at MMS will instill in students the world class knowledge and skills outlined in the Profile of the Edgefield County Graduate.
