Merriwether Middle School is proud to have Ms. Kim West starting her first full year here. Ms. West has been teaching for 32 years. Her experience has been in taken her from band directing to teaching English Language Arts over those years. She is at MMS this year teaching ELA in eighth grade. Ms. West has a degree in Music Education and later decided to switch to English Language Arts. She is very active local theater groups in the orchestra playing her clarinet. Her latest production is “Oliver!” which will perform the end of September. In addition to that she is a founding member of the Savannah River Winds Ensemble. On Sundays Ms. West can be found singing in her church choir at St. John Methodist Church where she has been a member most of her life.

Ms. West is also the recipient of the Vision Grant for this year. She collaborated with Ms. Bussey who also teaches 8th grade ELA on the Vision Grant. The focus of the grant was to get eighth graders reading more nonfiction. Ms. West challenges her students to stretch their reading boundaries by selecting more strenuous materials to read. By doing this, Ms. West states, “The students will see a jump in their vocabulary and their comprehension.”

When asked about her experience at MMS, Ms. West laughed and said, “I was in another county teaching, but, I got here as fast as I could!”
